Turnips are no doubt versatile yet underappreciated garden gems. They are fast-growing and easy-to-maintain veggies. I always prioritize growing turnips over other veggies not only because of their incredible taste but also because they provide food for my rabbits and my food security.

Here’s everything you need to know about growing turnips:

Why Grow Turnips?

People in the recent past loved calling turnips the ‘poor man’s food’.Conversely, in today’s world food security and local sourcing have become increasingly important. As a result, I prefer to give turnips a special spot in my garden.

Fast Growth: Several varieties of turnips, such as the classic purple top, take only 60-70 days to mature. This suggests that one can grow multiple crops per year.

High Yield: In a single harvest you can produce a hefty, blemish-free root that can weigh up to half a pound (227 grams).

Versatile Uses: As I mentioned earlier, turnips are famous for their versatility. They can be used in everything from fermented pickles to roasted dishes.

My Best Turnip Harvest Ever (And How I Did It):

We’ve been growing turnips for years, but 2022 was hands down our best harvest yet. Why? A few tweaks made all the difference.

I have been casually growing turnips for less than a decade, but 2024 was my best harvest yet. You may question me —what on earth did you do?

Seed Starting for Success: I changed my tactics of sowing seeds. I used to sow seeds directly into the garden but now I start my turnip seeds in trays. In doing so I can produce strong little rosettes that are easier to transplant and space evenly. Therefore, this process leads to uniform growth and healthier roots.

Pest Resistance: I have compared turnips to other brassicas and found that turnips are relatively pest-resistant. Although flea beetles and some unknown worms can inflict minor damage on the tops, I have minimal damage overall.

Harvest Time: What to Expect: When I pull a turnip, I always feel that I am digging for treasure. Until it’s out of the ground, I never know what I’ll get. The previous year my turnips were large, smooth, and almost blemish-free.

Double Duty: Food for me and my Rabbits:

I never let anyone throw green turnip tops because I know these nutritious tops are edible for both humans and animals.

Rabbit Fodder: My young bunnies love these green tops.

Winter Storage: Turnip roots store well and can be used as feed throughout the colder months. Plant a second crop in late summer and harvest before frost for extended use.
