I assume that you are neither a gardening enthusiast nor a hobbyist, but your heart will surely dance to the rhythm of the zephyr from a mini indoor garden. My gardening journey started 10 years back when I saw an organized mini indoor garden in my neighbor’s house. It was a scenic beauty.
I realized that I did not need to be a seasoned gardener to create a mini indoor garden in my home. What I required was an understanding of the available space and the sunlight each zone my home provided. In addition, with the right location and some creative gardening containers, I could grow a variety of edible plants indoors.
Where to Grow Your Edibles?
Our home offers different “zones” conducive to growing various plants. I have categorized these zones based on the amount of sunlight each area receives.
For example, south-facing rooms or areas with large windows receive an ample amount of sunlight. Therefore, they are perfect for growing vegetables and herbs. Conversely, partially sunlit zones like east or west-facing windows are beneficial for growing crops like lettuces or small vegetables. Moreover,I consider unheated rooms to be an ideal choice for plants that require a dormant winter period.
Maximizing Indoor Spaces:
Negative thoughts regarding the creation of a mini indoor garden may occasionally haunt you because you own a small apartment. But I assure you that even if you are living in a small apartment, you can maximize your space that can host a wide range of crops.
You already have plenty of space –from your windowsills to unheated hallways -for leafy crops, herbs, and even fruit trees. In addition, skylights can provide you with an excellent way to grow plants with even overhead light.
Indoor Edible Gardening in Low Light:
There are indoor edible plants that can grow in partially sunlit zones, including areas with limited daylight or dark corners. With the help of mirrors or grow lights you will be able to grow shade-tolerant herbs like mint and parsley, sprouts, lettuces, small root crops, and the like. Mirrors and grow lights help enhance the dimly lit areas.
Furthermore, plants like mushrooms and bush tomatoes thrive in gloomy spaces. You can achieve the best results with these plants if you use grow lights. By experimenting with different setups and using presence of mind you can provide the conditions needed for a productive indoor garden.
By now you have understood how to set up your indoor garden in a small or a spacious apartment. Here’s a comprehensive list of what you can grow indoors.
